We loved visiting Bulls and we weren’t on a farm

At the intersection of State Highways 1 and 3 in the Manawatu District you will find a town called Bulls.  We have passed this town many times, with each time saying we must stop and visit one day.  That day finally arrived.  We were house sitting in Marton and decided that visiting Bulls must be on our ‘to do’ list as it was only a 10-minute drive from where we were staying.

Why did we keep staying ‘we must stop and visit one day’?  It was the signs – the town’s marketing slogans.  Admittedly, the creation of the marketing slogans was many years ago.  However, some businesses were keeping these ‘bull’ slogans alive and well – so our hats off to these people.

Bulls – the slogan town

Bulls was once a pun-a-bull town, however as people move on or close shops, there are less puns around.  However, those that are there still retain their slogans which we find very appealing.  Maybe someone in town needs to re-energise the slogans and encourage the newbies to join the movement.

Entering Bulls from the South, you are introduced to the town with the sign “Herd of Bulls? A Town Like No Udder”.  You will also find life-sized replica bulls at the other entrances to town as well as in town.  And then, there are the signs.

Outside the medical centre where you find the Trojan bull and the Bull Information Centre are the signposts that point you in the direction of the shops and facilities.   The Information Centre shows the parking (park-a-bull), information (inform-a-bull) and public toilets (relieve-a-bull).  Through town you can find Mothered Goose (delect-a-bull), Notice-a-bull outside the public library, Scully’s Products (scent-a-bull) plus many others.

While the Police Station had a fading const-a-bull sign, their mural of bulls dressed as cops is cute, especially Sherlock Holmes.  Additionally, the rubbish bins are in on it.  They are milk urns that are ‘response-a-bull.

Take a break

Bulls is worth stopping in when you drive through.  If only, to check out the signs.
