We arrange to look after pets and houses while the owners are away on holiday.  Our house sits can be from one week to two months anywhere in New Zealand.  So far, we have been house sitting in Timaru, Palmerston North, Matamata, Hamilton, Thames, Marton, Napier, and Wainuiomata.  We particularly enjoy looking after the cats and dogs.  Extra bonus is the pleasure of keeping them company and taking the dogs out for walks.

House and pet sitting is becoming popular especially for home owners.  While their pets get looked after in their own homes, their homes are looked after while they’re away.  This is becoming more and more important for home security.  We mow the lawns and sometimes do some gardening.  Most of the time, it’s walking the dogs, feeding the cats and dogs and making sure the house is looked after.

Which house sitting site to choose?

There are many house sitting websites available, however we only use one – Kiwi Housesitters.  While there is a cost to joining (NZ$84/yr) we save money by not having to pay for power, rates, internet, etc so you easily get your joining fee back in this ways.

Once you have successfully completed your first house-sit, give your home owner an endorsement and ask that they give you one as well.  That way any future home owners can see your endorsement and before you know it, you’ll be getting requests every day.  When you set up your profile you can make yourself available in the whole of New Zealand or just one or two locations.  You can select if you want only short house sits, long house sits or any length.

Housesitting can also be your holiday if you don’t mind living at someone else’s home.  Just remember to leave the property as you found it.  In fact, we go out of our way to make it slightly better.  For example, we try and super clean before we leave.  Or we mow the lawns and pick up leaves even if they didn’t request it.
