Feilding; New Zealand’s Most Beautiful Town

We spend a week housesitting in Feilding and came to love this beautiful town. Feilding is known as ‘Friendly Feilding’ and has won the title ‘beautiful town’ several times.

Feilding Information Centre

The Feilding Information Centre is located at the railway station. We love the painted mural on the side of the building.

Feilding Farmers’ Market

While most farmers markets in New Zealand are generally in the weekend or evenings, Feilding’s Farmers Market is on a Friday morning. Located at the town square, it’s close to the town shops.

The stalls include local produce, local crafts as well as new and second-hand products.

Makino Bridge

The Makino Bridge was erected in 1900 by New Zealand Railways as an over rail bridge for Feilding pedestrians and was used as such until February 1978.

To preserve its historical value it was moved to its current site by the Feilding Lions Club and is regarded as a historic place.

Mason Family Rose Garden

While the garden has been a Rose Garden for some time, it was recently re-named Mason Family Rose Garden (2019). The Mason family were well-known horticulturalists from Feilding.

The Rose Garden is found at Kowhai Park. Both times we visited, it was busy with kids feeding the ducks. They are probably the best fed ducks around.

Kowhai Park

Alongside the Mason Family Rose Garden is the Kowhai Park. The Park consists of playing fields, playgrounds, as well as a small bush walk.

Awahuri Forest Kitchener Park

Following the end of Kowhai Park, there is a walkway that goes past farmland to the Awahuri Forest Kitchener Park. Along the way, we found this bridge to nowhere.

The broadwalk at Kitchener Park is level so is a good walk for all ages. The park can be busy at times with people walking their dogs, however there were many dogs off their leads.

The Lookout

As the Feilding landscape is so flat, we didn’t expect to see a sign for ‘Lookout’. It was a great walk up – good for exercise too.

Fortunately, it’s not a long street. The top of the street goes into farmland so not only do you get a view of the town, you get farms views as well.

While there are steps to the viewing platform, the view is also great if you want to sit in your car to admire the views.
