It was a wonderful experience touring the De Molen windmill having never been in a windmill before. What makes it such a wonderful experience is knowing that it is a working mill.

Ground Floor

The ground floor is the mill shop where you can purchase the milled flour and plenty of other goodies. A small donation ($2) allows you to climb the stairs to view the rest of the De Molen windmill. The self-guilded tour brochure is informative and very useful.

First Floor

We climbed the stairs to the first floor where you can sit down, relax. There is a DVD playing that explains how the windmill was built and how it works.

Second Floor

Keep climbing to the second level where you can go outside onto the balcony. Here you get great views of Foxton and can see all the way out to the ocean.

If the windmill is not operational while you’re there, you can walk all around the windmill on the balcony. However, there is limited access to the balcony if the mill is operational. We were lucky and have full access of the balcony so caught some awesome views.

Inside the De Molen Windmill are the two flour chutes from the millstones. See where the flour is collected, bagged and then sold in the shop.

Third Floor

Another set of steps takes you up to the third floor. While there is no outside access, you can gather some great views from the windows. On this floor are the wooden cabinets that contain the two millstones. Check out the awesome wooden gears that turn the millstones – very impressive.

Then it’s time to walk carefully and slowly down the three flights of stairs. Ensure you browse around the shop before you leave. Who knows, you may find something you need to buy.

Additionally take a walk to the Dutch Oven for a cuppa and check out their goodies.
