Burkes Pass is probably one of the coolest, smallest towns in New Zealand. Located on State Highway 8, between Tekapo and Fairlie, it’s a town that we usually drive through. So one day, we decided to stop and look around.

Three Creeks – Burkes Pass

Three Creeks is one of the most amazing shopping experiences ever – it is not an ordinary retail shop. Housed in a General Store, 1950s Service Station, Blacksmith Shop and Trading Store, the shops provide art works, crafts, giftware, retro collectibles, wooden furniture, plus so much more. And if you need a coffee, check out the retro coffee caravan.

The Heritage Walk

The Heritage Walk goes from the Cob Cottages to the Historic Cemetery. As most of the walk is on the grass, wear good sneakers to avoid slipping as you walk. We found the walk easy as it’s on the flat, however we drove from St Patrick’s Church to the Cemetery. This is a safer option as the cemetery is just outside of town. At each point of the trail are information boards that we found interesting.

Historic St Patrick’s Church

St Patrick’s Church was opened in 1872. Additionally, it is the Oldest Union Church in New Zealand. Fortunately, we visited when the church was open so were able to view inside. Most days the church is open to view. It’s a beautiful small church still in use today.

Burkes Pass Historic Cemetery

The Burkes Pass Historic Cemetery was the first cemetery in the MacKenzie District. The first recorded burial was Francis James Cowan (aged 9) on 19 November 1873. Interestingly, there were other burials prior to this date. However, they were not recorded so the names of the deceased are not known.
